
This is a shot of our "Neptune" campsite. This whole area is glacier moraine. Beneath all this gravel is solid ice. No moss, lichens, flowers, nothing, like being on another planet. Now I have a feel for what Everest climbers deal with.

Here's another view from "Neptune." We're at aprox. 5,000 ft which is about a 3,000 ft increase in elevation from the start of our hike. The idea of our Zone 10 trip was to hike up into one glacial valley over a pass and down another valley back to our starting spot. We definitely prefer the easy hiking of the valley to the treacherous glaciers, but the views were well worth it.

You have to be very careful crossing glacial
snowfields, below many of them is an under ground river created by the melting ice. Sometimes you can only hear the river, this time you can see it as an ice cave.
